Review: 2nd SafetyUpDate Congress in Graz, Austria, on 25 and 26 September 2007

27 September 2007: carhs.training GmbH and the Vehicle Safety Institute of the Technical University of Graz under the direction of Prof. Dr. Hermann Steffan hosted the second SafetyUpDate Congress in Graz, Austria, on 25 and 26 September.

The hands-on and up-to-date programme included presentations by leading experts from legislation, research and the car industry on the newest developments in the fields of biomechanics, crash legislation, NCAP tests, frontal and side impact, pedestrian protection, simulation, testing and active safety. It was followed with great interest by around 70 participants from over 10 countries. Some of the biggest automotive manufacturers were present, such as Audi, AutoVAZ, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Fiat, Hyundai, Opel, Porsche, Skoda and Volkswagen. A considerable number of system suppliers also participated in the congress.

Today’s highly dynamic development of the market requires a continuous and most effective form of knowledge transfer. The second Graz event has demonstrated once again that carhs’ concept, which offers up-to-date information in a concise and practice-oriented way on an expert level, has proven successful and has set a new benchmark for the transfer of knowledge.
The congress took place at the Technical University of Graz and was opened by Prof. Dr. Hermann Steffan with a presentation on accident research and biomechanics. He and the other presenters spoke about current developments and trends in the area of vehicle safety.
The presentation of Christian Amann (BMW), for example, focused on the US regulation FMVSS 214 which was only published at the beginning of September.
Andre Seeck from the Federal Institute for German traffic and roads gave a comprehensive view on the future development of NCAP tests in Europe and the USA. He stated that in the coming year, there will be extensive changes to the evaluation system of EuroNCAP. According to Seeck, the expected extension to 6 stars is now unlikely to be implemented. It can, however, be expected that a new summarizing evaluation will be created which will include the whiplash evalution in addition to frontal and side protection.
A new extension to the conference programme was the additional presentation „Advances in European Secondary Safety R&D” by Prof. Dr. Jac Wismans of CCAR / TNO which gave an overview on the status of the current international research projects that are being conducted in the area of vehicle safety.
Short presentations on current topics such as the simulation of airbag flow, leg impact in pedestrian protection and whiplash concluded the conference.
